San Paolo alle Tre Fontane
The Martyrdom of St. Paul
Around 67 AD, during the persecution of Emperor Nero, St. Paul was condemned to death.
Because he was a Roman citizen, he was executed by beheading rather than crucifixion.
The execution took place at the site now called Tre Fontane.
Why “Three Fountains”?
Tradition says that when Paul’s head fell, it bounced three times on the ground.
At each place where it touched the earth, a spring of water miraculously appeared.
These three springs give the sanctuary its name.
Inside the church you can still see the three marked spots and the fountains beneath the altar.
