What Makes a Jubilee Year Special:

  1. Origins:
The Jubilee Year goes back to the Old Testament, where every 50th year was a “year of release” for debts and slaves (Leviticus 25). The Catholic Church adapted this idea to spiritual renewal.

  2. Purpose:

    • Forgiveness of sins – Catholics can receive plenary indulgences, meaning full remission of temporal punishment for sins.

    • Pilgrimage – Traditionally, people make pilgrimages to Rome and pass through the Holy Doors of certain major basilicas.

    • Renewal of faith – It’s a time to reflect, repent, and start fresh spiritually.

  3. Holy Doors:
Special doors in major basilicas in Rome (like St. Peter’s Basilica) are opened only during a Jubilee Year. Passing through them symbolizes entering a renewed life in God’s mercy.

  4. Types of Jubilees:

    • Ordinary Jubilee: Occurs every 25 years.

    • Extraordinary Jubilee: Declared for special occasions (like Pope Francis’ 2016–2017 Jubilee of Mercy).

  5. Graces:
Pilgrims and faithful who participate in the Jubilee Year devotions, confessions, and Masses may receive plenary indulgences, which is considered a powerful spiritual blessing.
