🕰️ History

  • The basilica was built in the 13th century (beginning around 1257–1260) in the historic hill town of Assisi.

  • It’s dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, the first follower of Saint Francis and founder of the Order of Poor Clares.

  • The church was constructed around the earlier Church of San Giorgio, where Clare and Francis had family associations.

  • In 1260 her remains were moved into the new church, which was consecrated in 1265.

  • Her bones were later rediscovered and placed in a crypt beneath the basilica, where they remain visible today.

🏛️ Architecture

  • A large rose window and simple, powerful façade give the basilica a serene appearance.

  • The interior is austere with a single nave, emphasizing prayer and simplicity.

  • Important relics here include the original San Damiano Crucifix, significant in Franciscan spirituality.
