Basilica of Santa Chiara, Assisi (Umbria, Italy)
🕰️ History
The basilica was built in the 13th century (beginning around 1257–1260) in the historic hill town of Assisi.
It’s dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, the first follower of Saint Francis and founder of the Order of Poor Clares.
The church was constructed around the earlier Church of San Giorgio, where Clare and Francis had family associations.
In 1260 her remains were moved into the new church, which was consecrated in 1265.
Her bones were later rediscovered and placed in a crypt beneath the basilica, where they remain visible today.
🏛️ Architecture
The exterior is classic Gothic/Romanesque with bands of white and pink stone from nearby Mount Subasio.
A large rose window and simple, powerful façade give the basilica a serene appearance.
The interior is austere with a single nave, emphasizing prayer and simplicity.
Important relics here include the original San Damiano Crucifix, significant in Franciscan spirituality.
